The Evolution of Continuing Education: Challenges, Progress, and Priorities for 2025
The higher education landscape is shifting—and nowhere is this more evident than in professional and continuing education (PCE). The annual State of Continuing Education report unpacks how institutions are adapting to workforce demands, shifting credential strategies, and navigating internal challenges.

The Progress
48% say accessing real-time enrollment data for online and PCE students is easy—a major jump from 29% in 2024. Progress is clear, but challenges remain.
The Pain Point
Only 35% of PCE units say they’re adequately staffed, down from 45% in 2024. The biggest gap? Finance/Business Analysts (27%), a sharp rise from 19% in 2024 and 5% in 2023—highlighting the growing demand for data-driven roles.
The Priority
84% stated need for Easy and efficient registration process (i.e. shopping cart experience) as an essential element to achieve business goals.
